Whale Watching

The Salish Sea trips from Victoria, Cowichan Bay, Nanaimo and Parksville run roughly March to October and mostly encounter Bigg's (transient) orcas, humpbacks and, in spring, grey whales, alongside seals, sea lions and porpoises. Most operators here promise a sighting or offer a free return trip, and the choice on the dock is between a covered vessel (warmer, a cabin, better for children and rough water) and an open Zodiac (faster, wetter, closer to the water). Winter trips exist from Victoria on covered boats and target humpbacks and Bigg's orcas that stay year-round.

Telegraph Cove and Port McNeill, at the north end of the island, are a different experience: Johnstone Strait is where the northern resident orcas gather in summer to feed on salmon, and the season is short and sharp — roughly June to October. Campbell River, midway up the east coast, has strong humpback numbers through summer and autumn in the same waters the grizzly boats use.

On the Pacific coast, Tofino and Ucluelet see grey whales on their spring migration from March and resident greys through the summer, plus humpbacks; the ride out is exposed to open ocean swell. Only Ucluelet currently has whale departures listed on Viator; Tofino operators mostly sell direct.
