Boat Tours, Sailing & Fishing

Everything on the water that is not primarily about whales or paddling: harbour cruises past Victoria's waterfront, afternoon sails, the boat ride to Hot Springs Cove north of Tofino, Gulf Islands charters and salmon fishing out of Campbell River.

Boat Tours, Sailing & Fishing on Vancouver Island

Victoria's harbour boat tours are short, narrated loops of the Inner Harbour and the Gorge that suit a first afternoon or a cruise stop. The sailing trips are longer and quieter — an afternoon on the Strait of Juan de Fuca out of Sooke, or Nanoose Bay near Parksville — and depend on wind rather than a schedule.

Hot Springs Cove is the Pacific coast's special case: natural geothermal pools in Maquinna Marine Provincial Park, reached only by boat or floatplane from Tofino, with a boardwalk through the rainforest at the end. Boat tours make a full day of it and often see whales on the way.

Campbell River calls itself the salmon capital, and the fishing charters here are a serious business in summer and early autumn. Private boat charters around the Southern Gulf Islands from Sidney sit at the other end of the scale: a skippered day with your own group.
