Indigenous Cultural Experiences

A small number of listings are operated by First Nations tourism businesses and combine wildlife viewing with cultural interpretation led by community guides. We list them as the operator describes them and nothing more.

Indigenous Cultural Experiences on Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island and the adjacent coast are the territories of dozens of First Nations, and Indigenous-owned tourism is a significant and growing part of how visitors experience the region. On Viator that presence is currently concentrated in Campbell River, where Homalco Wildlife & Cultural Tours — owned by the Homalco First Nation — runs grizzly viewing and marine tours into Bute Inlet with cultural interpretation as part of the day.

We do not label a tour Indigenous-led unless the operator says so on its own listing, and we do not paraphrase or embellish what a cultural component involves. The operator's page on Viator, and the operator's own website, are the sources for who leads the tour, which nation it belongs to and what is shared.

If this is the heart of your trip, look beyond Viator: many Indigenous cultural experiences on the island — museums, cultural centres, guided walks and canoe tours — are booked directly. Indigenous Tourism BC maintains a directory of member businesses.
