Tigh-Na-Mara has been on Rathtrevor Beach since the 1940s and has grown into a small village of log cabins, condos and lodge rooms under the trees, with the Grotto Spa's mineral pool as the adult draw and the beach as the children's. In summer the tide goes out so far the sand warms; in winter the spa and the fireplaces carry the stay.
It is exactly halfway between the Nanaimo ferries and the Highway 4 turn-off, which makes it the natural overnight before the drive to the Pacific coast.
The water
On the sand at Rathtrevor Beach, where the tide retreats a kilometre in summer; the whale boats at French Creek are ten minutes away.
